The Grief and Hope Calendar takes the reader on a healing journey through twelve stations of time which constitutes one year beginning at the point of loss and ending with new perspective.

9/11 dramatized the temporal nature of life in an instant. It also illustrated the great interconnectedness which characterizes life on this Planet. We are not isolated individual entities. In our immense grief it becomes clear that all of us depend on the sacred synergy of each other and our natural world for continued existence.

With compelling images by Ike Karnick reflecting the inner turmoil of deep loss, and poetic text by Dr. Andrea Gould, the psychological process of sadness through transformation and new beginnings emerge. Each station on our calendar (or month if one prefers) includes a self-examining question, a poem, an image and a supportive direction for change.

9/11 leaves us the legacy of both sides of our connection to and separation from each other and our natural world. The impetus for and the consequences of this present day tragedy leave us grieving for all life that is lost and gone forever. The emptiness that remains allows us to fill ourselves with new realizations and hopefully more intelligent and creative ways of being.

This great opportunity can be transferred to the entire problem of life on earth for the human race. It is within this greater emphasis that our individual lives have meaning regardless of our personal tragedies. It is here that hope resides.

We opened the 21st century with an event destined to change the direction of the world and survival of all species. We stand on the threshold of using our despair to design new ways of living in sustainable personal and global connection.
