Only a profoundly passionate artist can bring Dead Beauties to LIFE.  Steven Schlesinger’s, artist /photographer, attraction to New York mannequins is beyond that of any published artist. With a library of a thousand images, this is an extraordinary tribute to the master craftsmanship of mannequin designers and producers. Page after page leaves the viewer questioning … is this real? Is it possible that there is a whole unseen collection of such beautiful art, never before captured on film? With the skillful lens of an artist whose attraction to women is beyond that of "Ruben’s", his heart belongs to the "Dead Beauties of New York."

LETTER FROM ARTIST:

Hello.
My name is Steven Schlesinger and I am a professional photographer, photographing fashions and beauty, actors and actresses, and pretty much anything else you can think of, for over 30 years now.

About 15 years ago, I found the urge to get out into the streets more and wanted to take pictures while I was out there, but had no idea what my subject matter was going to be.

Little kids, sleeping bums, cracks in the sidewalk, peeling posters, doors, clouds, buildings, village people, society people...I just couldn't get into any of this stuff. I had to find something that excited and stimulated my creative energies -something new and unexplored - something original that only I was doing.

I really did not want to hit the street without a point, so finding something out there to photograph was actually very important to me. And besides, I needed the exercise. Anyway the big day finally came and I took my 35mm Studio Camera into the street to see what we could find. It took a while of walking around before I came across what it was that I was looking for, but find it I did, and very happy I was.

The illusion of a beautiful woman in the form of a store mannequin, behind glass, in the window of a high-class store somewhere along 5th Avenue captured me. I took her picture. She was my first...

For many years, whenever I had some free time I would search the streets of New York for these quiet plastic beauties, and every one I found was as pretty to me as the last.

I also believe that I am photographing beauty that happens to be in the form of a mannequin and not a mannequin that happens to be beautiful.  I felt that I was giving both feeling and life to something that never had them before.

That, my friend, is the Mannequin story.  Yes, my camera and I are still walking around the streets of New York looking for that beauty in the store window just waiting for me to come along to take her picture...
